Photos of settings included, you will have to adjust the offset settings of the array modifier though, those might be different for you.
I use nurbs paths, and the array modifier with the curve modifier. Make sure your nurbs path curve deform is set to RADIUS.
Make sure to align the original chain links with the beginning of the path so it will follow closely.
